today i'd save on... isabel marant vs new look

On left: Isabel Marant Yoan alpaca-blend intarsia sweater, £385 at Net-a-porter

French designer Isabel Marant can do no wrong right now. She has a seemingly innate ability to produce endlessly beautiful, chic and wearable clothes season after season, inspiring fashion lust in stylish women the world over. And it's the way she captures the very essence of laid-back French chic which has her customers coming back for more. Take this amazing piece of knitwear. At first glance, it's just an ordinary cosy jumper. But styled up on the catwalk with white jeans, knee boots, feather earrings and hands dug nonchalantly into pockets, and it becomes an indescribably cool piece of clothing. Now it may well be that most of us will never manage to emulate Marant's effortless brand of chic, but we will certainly try our best. And for those of us who can't quite afford the real deal, rest assured that the high street can offer you the next best thing. For £24.99 this New Look jumper won't offer you quite the same level of fashion cred, but it's not a bad substitute. And styled up in just the right way (I think I'd team it with leather trousers and pointed courts), it may well manage to bestow on you just a little of that French magic Marant capitalises on to such great effect.
